Just about everything we eat has some nutritional value. But there are some foods that are so packed with goodness they should be on everyone’s diet. Of course, the best and most simple advice is to eat a balanced diet. So no-one should fill their kitchen with the foods on this list to the exclusion of all else. But as a regular part of a balanced diet, super foods have a positive effect on general health. Some things that did not quite make the list include olive oil, spinach and bananas. Here are the top 5.

We all know the old saying – “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” That is obviously not strictly true, but apples are very nutritious. They have vitamin C and other antioxidants as well as fiber and carbohydrates. Research indicates apples may even reduce the risk of some cancers.

Baked beans are the staple diet of children and college students all over the world. The humble bean in tomato sauce should be part of all our diets though, as it is packed with goodness. It contains protein, fiber, iron and calcium. Go for tins with low levels of sugar and salt.

Broccoli contains antioxidants and is a good source for folate, a naturally occurring folic acid. It is also a good source of vitamin C. It is thought that eating broccoli may help prevent some cancers and heart disease.

 

4. Wholegrain seeded bread

Wholegrain seeded bread is packed with goodness, particularly if you can get a brand with a low salt content. It is full of fiber which is something that helps the digestive system to work well.

 

5. Salmon

Salmon

Salmon contains protein, vitamins, and minerals. In particular, salmon has a high vitamin D content. Like other oily fish it also contains omega 3 fats which are also healthy.
